When writing about US currency, use “US” and the dollar sign before the amount to help distinguish it from other countries’ dollars. When writing about, say, Singaporean or Australian dollars, use “S$” or “A$”.

When writing about other currencies, use an abbreviation unless they are well-known currencies and you can find the relevant symbol. Otherwise, use an abbreviation. Remember, there is no space between a symbol and a number but there is a space between an abbreviation and a number.
